When it comes to traveling, there’s one person who, historically speaking, undoubtedly has a unique perspective – that person would be Christopher Columbus. So when we read that he once said the Dominican Republic was “the most beautiful land eyes have ever seen”, we believed it.
It makes sense that several centuries after Columbus landed on the island, it has become the most visited destination in the Carribean.
The country takes up the bigger part of the island Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti, and in the south it’s capital Santo Domingo boasts the first cathedral, castle, monastery, and fortress built in all of the New World. Go here for Romanesque colonial charm.
That it’s beaches are gorgeous is a no-brainer (this is the Carribean after all), but if you’re adventurously inclined, skip the sunbathing for the opportunity to spot humpback whales, which can be done in the Silver Bank, a stretch of water between the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.
If you prefer a leisurely, all-in holiday, that can be arranged too: The Francorosso website offers great deals that are the perfect entry point in discovering this corner of paradise.
