Sergei Polunin is a rebel in every way, that’s why we at Mandarina Duck are crazy about him.
As a ballet dancer, he’s a striking presence: he has tattoos all over his body that defy the classical aesthetics of his dance style. Nonetheless, his style of ballet is graceful and expressive, full of emotion, intensity and humanity. He may be the ‘bad boy of ballet’ but he does ballet like the best of them!
Together with the photographer David LaChapelle, he made a video in which he dances to Hozier’s Grammy nominated song ‘Take Me To Church”. It’s a heartfelt performance that looks much more serene and harmonious than what we’re used of the usually glam and gaudy LaChapelle.
It’s a perfect combination: Hozier’s grave vocals reverberate in a bare, abandoned wooden church while Polunin’s fluid movements follow the music with great emotion. LaChapelle captures all of this in a most unobtrusive way, letting the video speak for itself.
