Location, location, location, they say. This music video is proof of that, and it sure does make the most of its setting.
In the video for his song “Anna”, Will Butler, a multi-instrumentalist best known for his role in the band Arcade Fire, worked with the director Brantley Gutierrez and the actress Emma Stone.
The setting? An Art Deco ocean liner from 1936 named the RMS Queen Mary. It was part of a weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York City, dominating the popular transatlantic lines until the late 1950’s – until the growing aviation industry made her old-fashioned.
In 1967 it retired from service and became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Long Beach, California. In its current, permanently moored state, it’s a tourist attraction reminiscent of the way people used to travel to the Americas. It now holds a hotel, restaurants and a museum.
The video, in which a familiarly mischievous and funny Emma Watson frolics about on and below deck with sailors and captains alike, gives us a brilliant look into this storied Art Deco gem.
